Clean Items: Ensure all items are clean and dry before storing to prevent mildew, odors, and pests. Especially furniture, appliances and baby/toddler gear. These items carry the most bacteria causing residue and combined with moisture can lead to mold, mildew or damage over time.
Plastic Totes/Bins: These are the best for long-term storage and protection from moisture. Put moisture absorbers (like DampRid) or silica gel packets inside the totes. Avoid cardboard boxes, they can absorb moisture and are prone to mold.
Elevate Items: Keeping items off the floor protects them from moisture damage. Elevating items such as furniture that is likely to absorb moisture through the floor improves airflow, which reduces the risk of mold and mildew. Pallets, skids or furniture risers are a simple, cost effective way to elevate things off the floor. Avoid over-filling. Leave space between items so that air can circulate.
Protecting Furniture: Use breathable fabrics like moving blankets and sheets to protect against dust and moisture but avoid plastic wraps which can trap humidity.
